PB Lawrence Stakes

The 2017 PB Lawrence Stakes is a highly entertaining Group 2 contest which pits a unique assortment of horses against each other at often different stages of their preparation and racing lives.

The Lawrence Stakes was formerly known as the JJ Liston Stakes up until 2011 when it had a change of name, however the foundations of the event remain unchanged. The Group 2 contest is held at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne.PB Lawrence Stakes

The 2017 PB Lawrence Stakes will be held on Saturday, August 12th, 2017.

It is among the first group of black type events to be held in the new season and plays an important role in getting horses ready for the big races later in the spring.

That’s not to say it isn’t important in itself though, the weight for age conditions make it a battle for only the better horses running around in the country.

The event stretches for 1400m with $200,000 in prize money up for grabs.

The interesting aspect of the race is having a mix of short race specialists matching up against staying types using this as their first up run for the new season.

While on paper a mile specialist would look to have the race sewn up, a gap in class can make things tough for punters.

For example the very best stayer may still have enough kick to make themselves a pest in this race up against a field of modest sprinters.

This is what makes the race so exciting and what keeps crowds coming to Caulfield Racecourse.

If a horse isn’t first up in the Lawrence Stakes there’s a good chance they came into it through the Bletchingly Stakes, also under weight for age conditions, two weeks earlier.

That event is an extra 200m but apart from that gives an almost perfect form read.

For horses doing well here they may either choose to remain at 1400m for the Group 2 Memsie Stakes while the stayers will step it up towards a Caulfield Cup distance.

As the race is held early in the season the very top echelon of horses may not be out and certainly won’t be in top flight, however there’s still a handy list of Lawrence Stakes results.

Regal Roller won the event in 2004 and Pompeii Ruler did the same in 2006.

Australian champion Apache Cat claimed the 2007 race while in 2009 Predatory Pricer beat home the more fancied Whobegotyou and Typhoon Tracy.

Shoot Out also won this race in 2010 before going on to become a multiple Group 1 champion.

The PB Lawrence Stakes betting usually takes off about twenty minutes prior to the race itself. Because this isn’t a major feature event, a lot of form study and betting selections are done on the day of the race, rather than a week or more in advance.

However, you can easily make your betting selections and place your PB Lawrence Stakes bets from home, or on your mobile anywhere. Our recommendation is Ladbrokes.com.au, as they provide a great platform and excellent odds.

When doing your form study, consider some of the top PB Lawrence Stakes betting tips, such as this one: Pick a sprinter that has already beaten horses at this group level. Go for a 1400m expert, and bet on them.
