The Cleaner has become something of an Australian racing cult hero since charging home to win the 2014 edition of the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and subsequently claiming ballot-free entry into the Cox Plate, and has only continued to improve through recent campaigns.

Having been transferred to the care of Peter Gelagotis from the Longford stables of Mick Burles for his 2016 campaign, stable foreman Manny Gelagotis told G1X the team has been thrilled with the son of Savoire Vivre and are confident he will be tough to beat in the 2016 PB Lawrence Stakes.

“The good thing for Pete, the owners and all of us, is the regime we have put in place to get him back to the track seems to have been as successful as we could have hoped for,” he said.

“He’s absolutely airborne, his attitude shows the zest for racing is there and Steve (Arnold) said his action felt terrific. He went as straight as a gun barrel, he said the old boy felt as good as ever, and he looks unreal.”

“Basically he has been in work since the very first day he came to our stables, he has been a great patient and thankfully adapted very well to Pete’s rehab program.”

“It is an intensive one focused on getting the horse happy to stable life and he is now treated as a fully-sound ready-to-go racehorse.”

The Cleaner has posted an impressive nineteen wins and a further six minors through his busy fifty-four start career since debuting for Burles during the early stages of 2011.

Running a close second to now stable mate Mourinho in last year’s edition of the PB Lawrence Stakes, The Cleaner returned to winning form in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes before running a handy third in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).

Running seventh in the Cox Plate, The Cleaner failed to make anything of an impression in one final Tasmanian start when seventh in the Listed Conquering WFA (1400m) on December 9th.
