2016 PB Lawrence Stakes Field & Betting Odds

August 10th, 2016

A final field of 15 weight-for-age hopefuls is engaged to face off at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday for Melbourne’s first Group 2 race of the new season – the P.B. Lawrence Stakes 2016.

Formerly known as the JJ Liston Stakes, the early Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival feature runs as Race 7 at 4:00pm (AEST) on Saturday with plenty of talent in the line-up for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m).

Early PB Lawrence Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are also now out and five of the gallopers are under $10 for the win including $4.20 favourite Mahuta.

Jockey Brad Rawiller continues his association with Darren Weir’s consistent young Flying Spur stallion, Mahuta making his four-year-old debut in the race.

He won six races on the trot over a strong spring – autumn campaign last season headlined by the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) win at the Gold Coast in January and the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield the next month.

Mahuta failed to handle the class of Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in March however running second last when 14th to Palentino, but looked back on track first-up at Caulfield on July 30 running third in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m).

He is tipped to improve again second-up at his preferred track getting out over his pet distance of 1400m, which he has won all four of his previous starts over heading into the PB Lawrence.

The next best in PB Lawrence Stakes betting this year at $5 is a proven Group 1 winner at the track and distance, Nigel Blackiston’s class mare Suavito after her first victory since the CF Orr Stakes (1400m) here in February.

The now six-year-old daughter of Thorn Park may have run a distant 11th last start in Sydney behind Azkadellia in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on April 9, but she ticks plenty of boxes ahead of her assignment on Saturday.

She has a strong first-up record (5-3-1-1), loves Caulfield (8-4-1-3) and is a gun at the track / distance (7-4-1-2).

The other best fancied following closely in betting at $5.50 is the Robbie Laing-trained Lord Of The Sky, the six-year-old Danerich stallion coming off the Bletchingly Stakes win here over Mahuta (3rd).

He might be travelling in good form, but Lord Of The Sky is yet to win over further than 1200m and will need to be at his best to beat this smart field over the 1400m.

Rounding out the single-figure fancies for a race that serves as a good lead-up to the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in a fortnight’s time are the rails-drawn Caulfield track specialist Miss Rose De Lago ($7.50) who has won three from four at the course and last year’s runner-up The Cleaner ($9) debuting for Moe-based trainer Peter Gelagotis.
